About the Project
The City of Charles Sturt encompasses over 14kms of pristine coastline between West Beach and Semaphore, attracting thousands of residents and visitors on a daily basis.
In line with Council's Long Term Financial Plan commitment of $100,000 annually to deliver initiatives to encourage walking and cycling, we are working to improve pedestrian safety and access across the City, particularly along our coastlines.
As part of our commitment to sustainable transport infrastructure, we are planning to install zebra crossings in two precinct locations - Esplanade, Henley Beach / Henley Beach South and the intersection of Jetty Street and the Esplanade, Grange.
A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing with its most distinguishing feature being the alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface, similar to the coat of a zebra. A zebra crossing gives priority to pedestrians and bicycle riders using the footpath over vehicles and cyclists on the road.
Under the Australian Road Rules, zebra crossings operate at all times, meaning that a driver must stop at the crossing to give way to a pedestrian who is crossing or about to cross.
Both projects will include new ramps, line marking, signage and a lighting upgrade.
In addition, an existing parking space, within the Grange Jetty Precinct car park, will be converted into an accessible parking space. This will result in a loss of one parking space in order to provide an area to manoeuvre a wheelchair or other types of mobility aides.
Installation of the new zebra crossings is planned to commence prior to the end of June 2024.
You can view of copy of the plans showing the proposed works under the Document Library.
Where to view a Zebra Crossing
If you have never seen a zebra crossing before, you can walk along one at Jetty Street/Charles Sturt Avenue or Jetty Street/High Street, in Grange.
Other zebras can also be found on Military Road, Henley Beach near the Ramsgate Hotel.
