Project Updates

Project Overview

Three streets in Woodville West being Cardiff Street, Gawler Street and Smith Avenue, have been identified as streets that have vehicle speeds that present a high risk to road safety which is in-ine with Council’s endorsed Road Safety Assessment Procedure for New Traffic Controls. Typical speeds within all three streets are currently in the low 50’s (km/h) which is not considered acceptable in a street with a 40km/h speed limit.

These streets don’t currently have traffic management measures and/or calming infrastructure in place and this project proposes to install Watts Profile Speed Humps to lower traffic speeds and improve pedestrian safety.

What is being proposed?

Road Humps are being proposed as the most feasible traffic calming device to reduce traffic speeds along all the identified streets as well as to reduce cut-through traffic that are using the street to divert to Trimmer Parade and Findon Road.

What are Road Humps?

Road humps are raised sections of road to slow drivers. They are required by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport to be evenly spaced along the road, at approximately 80-120 metre intervals and humps should also be located within 50 metres of the start of the road where possible. Although road humps are likely to reduce the speed that vehicles travel along this route, they may not have a significant impact on the volume of traffic.

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Slow drivers to approximately 20 km/h over hump and 40 km/h along the street
  • May deter some non-local traffic from using the street
  • Relatively easy for cyclists to use
  • They are cost effective
  • No loss of on-street parking (you can park over them)
  • Low maintenance
  • Can be inconvenient for residents and emergency services accessing the street
  • Increase in noise at and on approach to each hump
  • Minimal effect in reducing hoon-driving behaviour
  • Can limit subdivision opportunities due to access in and out of driveways
