Thank you for participating in this engagement!
We have reviewed the feedback that was received during the consultation period and prepared a report on the community engagement outcomes. A decision report is being prepared for consideration by the Asset Management Committee at its meeting of 19 June 2023 which will seek a decision on the request to rename the existing Tatura Reserve to "John and Teresa Pinto Reserve", or "John Pinto Reserve". We are currently exploring if there is any information available on the history or cultural significance of the existing name, "Tatura Reserve", to inform this decision report.
Thank you for your patience. We will notify all participants of the consultation process when the engagement and decision reports are released, and before a decision is made.
More about the renaming request
Tatura Reserve is 3,134m2 located in Fulham Gardens on Tatura Crescent.
It contains a large well-established Fig Tree, other established and well-maintained landscaping, some grassed areas and a picnic setting. The reserve is designated as a Local Park in Councils Open Space Strategy.
Council has received a request to rename the reserve currently known as Tatura reserve, to "John & Teresa Pinto Reserve". Council has approved consideration of this request but is also including consideration of "John Pinto Reserve" as an option. We are now asking the community to tell us what you think.
Mr John Pinto, his wife Teresa, and their family lived adjacent to Tatura Reserve between 1972 and 2020. Mr John Pinto served his local community as an elected member for the City of Charles Sturt for 29 years and was made an Honorary Freeman (#25) of the City by his colleagues in recognition of his service.
Following his dedicated service to Council, he continued his commitment to the community as a voluntary Charles Sturt Community Bus driver.
Under our Reserve Naming Policy, where a request to name a reserve is approved by Council for consideration, we will undertake consultation to understand the views of the local area, and the broader community should they have an interest.
The outcomes of the consultation will be considered by the Council in making its final decision on the renaming of the reserve. This decision is likely to be made in May. Other components that will inform decision-making will include the weight and merit of the initial request, expert advice, other historical, cultural, social, environmental, or economic factors, as well as Council's discretionary view.
If the community does not support the proposed reserve renaming, the Council will consider this when it makes a final decision on the renaming request. If the Council decision does not endorse the request to change the name, the reserve will keep its current name - 'Tatura Reserve'.
