Do you, your friends or family visit River Park Reserve in Allenby Gardens or might in future?
We would love to hear from you!

We are replacing the existing play structure/fort and 2 swing sets in the River Park Reserve play spaces in Allenby Gardens in the 2025/26 financial year. The basket and rope swings will remain.

We need your feedback to understand how you use this play space and what new structure you might like to see, especially if it would encourage you or your family to visit more often.

Read on for more information about the space and to look at examples of other playgrounds renewals of this size for inspiration. Then, please take a few minutes to help your children or young people in your life to share their play preferences using the online feedback form on this page. The feedback shared will help shape the new playground elements which will last for the next 15 to 20 years.

About the space

River Park Reserve located on Moorfield Terrace in Allenby Gardens. It includes a playground, tennis court, basketball and netball half-court, irrigated lawn area and large open spaces, access paths (including to Torrens Linear Park), shelters, picnic settings and seating and BBQs.

Dogs can be exercised here off-leash, away from the playground.

The playground is a higher-level 'Neighbourhood' playground. Neighbourhood playgrounds should have good quality play equipment and an appealing landscape, with some special more unique or innovative play features for young people to enjoy.

Other projects related to this reserve:

  • Irrigation Renewal - to be completed this financial year (2024/25)
  • West Hindmarsh, Hindmarsh & Welland Your Neighbourhood Plan - A key project of this YNP was to Upgrade River Park Reserve with proposals including another new tennis or basketball court, a cricket practice net. Community suggestions included public toilet facilities, irrigation of grassed areas and a nature play space. All feedback received about River Park Reserve under this consultation will be considered in the playground renewal. If additional funding is available to deliver some of these upgrades, we will let you know through the playground renewal project updates.

What's included in the renewal?

The following elements are included for consideration in the Grange Recreation Reserve playground renewal, dependent on the budget:

  • The adult and junior swing set and the play structure/fort.
  • Accessibility and inclusivity principles, for example, rubber softfall, access paths, and equipment for specific needs or which can be used by young people of varying ages - something for everyone.
  • Improved landscaping, including tree and shrub plantings, to provide natural shade, increase our local canopy cover, and for biodiversity and urban cooling.

Note: Separate to the play renewal, we are also planning to replace some of the existing park amenities at the same time. Subject to necessary funding, we will replace all reserve seating, the three existing BBQs and replace or refurbish the existing shelters. While these elements are not part of the playground renewal, we have received funding to bring forward the replacement of these items to ensure a refreshed and rejuvenated play and gathering space. These were also improvements the local community requested in the Your Neighbourhood Plan consultation.

What's not included?

Play features not being renewed as part of this project:

  • Basket swing
  • Rope swing

The following new or replacement reserve or amenity elements are not considered as part of a playground renewal process:

  • Public amenities such as public toilets, shelters and picnic settings.
  • Electric BBQ or drinking fountain, though these can be considered separately.
  • Fixed shade structure/s over the playground, unless specifically included.
  • Fitness equipment - this infrastructure is separate from playground infrastructure. Installation of fitness equipment is a dedicated project identified due to high demand or a dedicated budget.
  • Sports accessories, such as goals, rings, hardcourts, etc. These are considered under a dedicated budget program if they're assessed as being suitable for or required for the site.

If you feel any of these elements need to be considered for this location, you can share this feedback on our Customer Portal by selecting 'Feedback' and specifying what you're requesting at this reserve and why. This feedback is considered in future reserve upgrades or improvements.

Otherwise, you can also contact your local elected member who may put in a request for the money under the annual budget process to have the improvement considered.
