Thanks to everyone who shared feedback on our draft playground renewal plan for Sunningdale Reserve in Fulham Gardens during the consultation period (18 September 2023 - 16 October 2023). We have prepared a final design which includes some changes to the draft design we consulted with you on, based on details and feedback you provided during the consultation. Read on to see the results and to view the final plan.

Construction of the new playground is expected to start in June and will take 4-6 weeks to complete. The playground area will be fenced off temporarily to restrict public access and playground use during the construction period.

What you told us during consultation

Consultation participants shared their feedback. We have summarised the main points, below:

Consultation outcomes and final design

The final playground renewal plan for Sunningdale Reserve included similar but more updated, existing play features based on current trends, best practice and accessibility, and local enjoyment including:

  • New, large play tower with big slides and climbing
  • Inclusive, all ages swing set with basket swing, toddler swing and junior swing;
  • Toddler slide with stairs (added into the final design following feedback);
  • Rocker and carousel; and
  • Tree planting for natural shade.

Based on the consultation feedback, we have removed one of the rockers from the draft plan and added in a small slide for younger children (eg toddlers). We have also added more swings. While not included in the scope of the project, we received a high number of requests for additional seating and we are exploring if we can install additional seating this financial year using savings or recycled products from other reserves.

We received a few requests for either an in-ground trampoline/s and fitness equipment. In-ground trampolines are typically reserved for installation at large/regional reserves with very high demand, due to the high costs of installation and ongoing maintenance. The request for fitness equipment in this location will be referred to the Open Space Planner for future consideration.

Public amenities, such as public toilets, BBQs and shade structures were out of scope for this project, but will be recorded for future consideration based on demand. A focus has been placed on natural shade in this reserve; there are quite a few trees surrounding the playground already and we will be adding some small trees within the play area to increase natural shade. The new play structure (tower) also has some shading devices built in.
