Background

As part of the Ovingham Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) committed to providing new areas of open space to the community, through the development of 3 new pocket parks in now-vacant land at the following locations:

• Torrens Road x Chief Street, Brompton - approximately 2,670m2 (City of Charles Sturt)
• Torrens Road x Drayton Street, Bowden - approximately 4,000m2 (City of Charles Sturt)
• Rear of 5-17 Devonport Terrace, Ovingham (City of Prospect)

DIT’s budget commitment for the construction of these pocket parks is for the delivery of landscaped areas with:

• Central and accessible open space
• Planting of trees and vegetation
• Irrigation
• Paths and edging, and
• For the Drayton Street Pocket Park; car parking bays and a natural storm water detention (using Water Sensitive Urban Design principles), and
• For the Chief Street Pocket Park; a shared-use path for connection with a future cycle network on Chief Street.

Please refer to the landscape concept designs, below, to see the initial scope of works for each pocket park.

We are now engaging with the community until 17 March 2024 on the initial landscaping designs for the Drayton and Chief Street Pocket Parks. We will also be responsible for the final designs and construction of these spaces in 2024/25. Any suggestions for additional features or improvements to the sites outside of the above, approved scope of works will be subject to future Council budget approval and construction (eg considered for construction in 2025/26).
