Road assets in Jane Street are at the end of their serviceable life and require rehabilitation. When planning road rehabilitation projects, we also investigate current and potential future transport demand within the local street and surrounding network to determine what improvements can be made to ensure that the road can operation as safely and as efficiently as possible.

The traffic conditions in Jane Street at school drop-off and pick-up times have been a cause of concern for residents and the school community for some time.

Parents and caregivers typically enter Jane Street via Port Road and Blanford Street and drop-off and pick-up passengers on the western side (school side) of the street before having to turn around to head southbound towards Port Road because this is the only way to exit Jane Street (as there is no access to Rosetta Street from Euston Terrace). There is little space in Jane Street and at the Euston Terrace intersection to perform U-turns and therefore drivers undertake 3-point turns at various locations along Jane Street, frequently coming into conflict with traffic travelling in both directions in Jane Street and creating a safety hazard.

Unfortunately, there is no space at the intersection of Jane Street and Euston Terrace to construct a roundabout to manage safe turns in Jane Street.

Requiring all vehicles to enter the section of Jane Street between Blanford Street and Euston Terrace via Euston Terrace will remove two-way traffic in a narrow roadway and will remove the need for drivers to undertake dangerous turning manoeuvres in Jane Street after dropping off and picking up passengers. This is expected to improve traffic flow and overall road safety in Jane Street.

The one-way restriction would have to apply at all times as there is currently no way to safely manage part-time one-way traffic restrictions.

It is also proposed to relocate the school’s crossing closer to the school gate and north of Blanford Street so that children have to only cross a single (one-way) lane of traffic.

We are now seeking your views about the proposal to convert the section of Jane Street from Euston Terrace to Blanford Street to one-way as part of our upcoming road rehabilitation works.
