Crawford Lane Project is now complete
Crawford Lane is a local access street within the Hindmarsh precinct which connects Port Road and Manton Street. The laneway has high volumes of pedestrian activity due to the connectivity it provides to Hindmarsh Stadium and adjacent properties. Traffic volumes within the laneway are generally low (approximately 50 vehicles per day). The laneway currently has a posted speed limit of 40km/h, with vehicular access to/from Port Road restricted by bollards.
The Reimagining Crawford Lane Project seeks to improve the safety and connectivity for people using Crawford Lane, while maintaining low-speed vehicle access where it is required.
Possible design options include:
- The conversion of the laneway to a ‘shared zone’ with posted speed limit reduced to 10km/h and drivers required to give way to pedestrians at all times.
- Formalising parking and loading bays for nearby traders near Port Road, creating a more attractive space for new and existing businesses to thrive.
- Creating a pedestrian plaza between Manton Street and Orsmond Street and closing this section of laneway to motor vehicle traffic.
- Installing artwork, landscaping, lighting and other innovative design elements.
